The Turkish Transplantation Society was established in 1990 with the mission of promoting research and education in organ/tissue transplantation, and enhancing communication in our field at national and international levels. With strong commitment and much enthusiasm on the part of members and organizers, the society has hosted seven international scientific congresses to date. The proceedings of these meetings have been published in Transplantation Proceedings, and an eighth congress is scheduled for June 2005. To recognize pioneering contributions and excellence in our field, the society has established some prizes for clinical work and research. At the 2001 congress, the first Felix T. Rapaport Memorial Award was presented to Dr. Anthony P. Monaco. The most recent meeting in 2003 saw the first Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Award, the first J. Wesley Alexander Research Award, and the second Felix T. Rapaport Memorial Award bestowed on Drs. John S. Najarian, Gerhard Opelz, and Adibul Hasan Rizvi, respectively. The first İhsan Doğramacı Award will be presented at the upcoming conference in 2005. All these honors will be given at each of the society’s future international meetings.
Throughout 14 years of focus on its mission, the Turkish Transplantation Society has collaborated closely with other national and community-based institutions that share similar visions for transplantation. The association has made major strides working with government authorities and mass media to raise public awareness about the benefits of transplantation. As well, our members have organized numerous campaigns and conferences to promote organ donation.
